POLICE yesterday said the men behind the attempt on the life of physician Zaynab Abejuela on Tuesday night were hired killers.

The announcement came even as the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) stepped in and started looking into the case, according to the police.

Chief Insp. Harvey Abellanosa, chief of the Cogon police station, said investigators were also convinced that the two men who carried out the attack near the corner of Yacapin and Quirino streets in Barangay 35 on Tuesday night were from outside Cagayan de Oro.

“Mga hired gunmen tua sila ug dili taga dinhi sa Cagayan,” said Abellanosa.

The assailants, riding a motorcycle, shot and wounded Dr. Abejuela while she was seated beside the driver of her white Toyota Fortuner near Cogon market. They were on their way to Barangay Carmen where the physician lives.

The 45-year old Abejuela survived the attack; she is recuperating from a gunshot to the chest in a hospital at presstime.

Abellanosa said investigators were now digging deep into a likely motive that’s personal in nature.

He said police have a “person of interest” but declined to identify the suspect so as not to jeopardize the ongoing investigation.
