ROMAN Catholic priests here would meet over the supposed distribution of so-called “satanic rosaries” that, according to one of Archbishop Antonio Ledesma’s deputies, could cause demon possession.

Msgr. Perseus  Cabunoc, vicar-general of the local Roman Catholic archdiocese, sounded alarm bells yesterday even as he cautioned Catholics against the spread and use of the fake rosaries.

He claimed that users of satanic rosaries were vulnerable to “evil spirits.”

“Imo gud nga gigamit ang rosary ni Satanas. ’Di unsa may mahitabo nimo? Sudlan gyud ka sa bad spirit kon  imo ning gamiton  nga klasi sa rosary,” Cabunoc said.

He said the “satanic rosaries” were being spread in the country now as part of a global campaign of so-called satanists against Christianity.

The problem, he said, is that satanic rosaries were difficult to spot in that these look like authentic Roman Catholic rosaries.

He said information from the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines indicated that the satanic rosaries were being distributed for free in public places.

Cabunoc said genuine rosaries cannot be bought in markets or just about any place and neither are these being distributed for free in the streets, parks and similar crowded areas.

“Walay genuine rosary nga ipanghatag. Didto ra gyud kana mapalit sa mga religious store,” Cabunoc said.

Cabunoc advised Catholics who were given rosaries to bring these to priests for examination.

He said priests here would meet and discuss counter measures.

Cabunoc’s claim about the spread of satanic rosaries in the country, particularly in the city, could not be independently verified.

But this paper checked the CBCP website and found a news story that quoted Fr. Ambrosio Nonato Legaspi warning about the circulaton of satanic rosaries in the country. Legaspi was referred to in the story as a Libera Nox chief exorcist.

But in the CBCP story, Legaspi claimed that the satanic rosaries were  being distributed by the “Illuminati,” a mythical secret society that has been a favorite subject of conspiracy theorists and authors of fiction.

Another article in the CBCP website said the satanic rosaries or “New Age” rosaries are made of plastic and come in white, pink, blue or black. It said the pentagram impressed on the crucifix’s four tips and there is a serpent near the crucified man.
