THE Cagayan de Oro City Police Office would be beefing up security measures as activists prepare to launch nationwide protests against the Duterte administration’s policies on Thursday, the 45th anniversary of the Marcos martial law.

Chief Insp. Mardy Hortillosa, Cocpo spokesman, said police officers would be visible in the streets during the demonstrations to ensure peace and order.

But Hortillosa said the officers would keep their distance from protesters — 50 meters from where activists would be demonstrating.

He said Cocpo would continue to step up security measures and conduct “preventive patrol” operations in coordination with the military.

Progressive organizations under the banner of Bagong Alyansang Makabayan are now legworking for a regionally coordinated mobilization here on Thursday.

Vennel Chenfoo of the group Kabataan told the Gold Star Daily that their allied organizations in the region would launch massive protest actions as they remember the Sept. 21, 1972 declaration of martial law by the then strongman Ferdinand Marcos.

“Magpahigayon pud gihapon og protesta dira sa Cagayan de Oro nga pagatambungan sa mga pesante ug mamumuo,” said Chenfoo, who is in Manila joining those who are taking part in the Lakbayan 2017.
