DAVAO City — Residents of Talaingod town in Davao del Norte province found a Philippine Serpent Eagle (Spilornis holospilus) along a road under construction on Thursday afternoon.
In a Facebook message, Jill Majaducon, 31 said her husband Beldion Majaducon found the eagle around 2 pm in Sitio Indangan, Barangay Sto. Niño.
“Nagtrabaho pa sila sa karsada, nag-aspalto ug nakita nila nga naglingkod sa daplin,” she said.
Majaducon said the bird is still in their custody as of press time. She said they will report it to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources adding that the bird showed signs of weakness.
Meanwhile, Rai Gomez, education administrator of the Philippine Eagle Foundation said the bird is endemic to Philippine forests.
Gomez said since the country lacks researchers on raptors, they cannot give a specific count of the Philippine Serpent Eagle’s population. She said, however, that the number of the Philippine Serpent Eagle is decreasing.
“These birds are really hunted because some see them as pets or as threats to their other animals,” she said. (davaotoday.com)
