POLICE yesterday claimed that it foiled an alleged attempt by the Abu Sayyaf to launch an urban terror attack days before the 31st Asean Summit.
Police Director General Ronald dela Rosa said authorities arrested the suspects in the afternoon of Nov. 10 in Quezon City ahead of the arrival of Asean leaders and senior officials for the Nov. 12-14 summit.
The suspects were identified as Abdulgaffar Jikiri a.k.a. Abu Bakar Jikiri, 19; Sadam Jhofar, 24; and Alim Sabtalin, 19.
Dela Rosa said the suspects yielded two caliber .45 pistols, a 9mm handgun, assorted ammunition, M-203 rifle grenades, and cellphones.
Dela Rosa said the three had planned to carry out an terror attack but was successfully foiled by the Quezon City Police District, National Intelligence Coordinating Agency, and the National Bureau of Investigation-Counter Terrorism Division.
The suspects were charged with violation Section 28 of RA 10591 or the Act Providing for a Comprehensive Law on Firearms and Ammunition, and for violating the 15-day gun ban set for the Asean Summit period.
Dela Rosa claimed that the information about a terror plot was confirmed by the government’s intelligence community. But the suspects denied that there was such a plan. (pna)
