DIGOS City — Quick reactions and intensive police investigation has led to the arrest of the prime suspect in the killing and possible rape of a 14-year-old student whose decomposing body was found over the weekend in Barangay Tiguman, this city.
Senior Insp. Gil Arobo, Digos City police chief investigator said they arrested Victor Malanog, 32, single, a resident of Barangay Tiguman during their follow up operation.
Arobo said Malanog will be detained at the lock up cell in Digos City. Authorities have filed charges against the suspect yesterday.
“The crime that will be charged against him is punishable with reclusion perfetua where we can detain him for 72 hours. So, we could not be accused of arbitrary detention,” Arobo said.
Scene of the Crime Operatives recovered a polo shirt at the perimeter of the abandoned livestock farm where the decomposing body of the victim was found by relatives who launched a massive search for the girl after she went missing last Thursday night.
Neighbors have identified the polo shirt to be frequently worn by Malanog who is just living at the same village.
Police invited him to come to the crime scene and requested Malanog to wear the shirt which is a perfect fit.
Malanog initially denied ownership of the shirt but he quickly changed tune saying it was his shirt but he already thrown it away some four months ago.
Arobo said aside from the polo shirt the police have two teenage witnesses who claimed they saw Malanog hurriedly walking from the vicinity of the crime scene last Thursday night.
“We already have strong evidence against the suspect that could pass the requirements of the prosecution,” Arobo said.
