MISAMIS Oriental Gov. Yevgeny Vincente Emano yesterday announced plans to build a P50-million planetarium in El Salvador City. If plans don’t miscarry, it would become the first planetarium of its kind in Mindanao.

Emano said a technical team would oversee the planning of the building that would house instruments for projecting the positions of the planets onto a domed ceiling.

He said officials of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration-Department of Science and Technology met with him on Friday to discuss plans to build the planetarium beside the Pagasa station.

Emano said the P50-million fund for the planned planetarium is already available for use.

He said the plan is to start the construction this year, and it would be a fully air-conditioned dome.

A capitol dispatch said there was an “80-percent probability” that the project would push through following a consultative meeting with chiefs of the national government agencies, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau.

“This project will be the first in Mindanao to be built in Misamis Oriental. We have already one in Luzon and one in Visayas. We are proud this will rise in Misamis Oriental,” Emano said.

The governor welcomed the plan, saying it would complement the capitol’s efforts aimed at boosting tourism in the province and would get rid of the need for students in Mindanao to go to the National Planetarium in Manila.

“Mahimo na dayon nga ang mga estudyante gikan sa Davao, Gensan (Gen. Santos) ug uban pang dakbayan mubisista sila dinhi sa Misamis Oriental aron pagsaksi sa mao nga planetarium. Field trip kunbaga,” said Emano.
