TWO New People’s Army rebels were killed while a soldier was wounded after a series of encounters since the weekend between the rebel group and government troops in Lagonglong town in Misamis Oriental.

Lt. Tere Ingente, 4th Infantry Division spokesperson, said the first clash happened at around 9 am Sunday when government troops chanced on guerrillas from the Guerrilla Front 4B of the NPA’s North Central Mindanao Regional Committee near Sitio Kamansi in Barangay Banglay.

Ingente said the exchange of firepower lasted about 25 minutes. It was during this encounter when the soldiers were able to kill two rebels, she said.

Ingente said they could identify only one of the two rebels killed as Odelo Compas a.k.a. Sapayanan.

She said the slain rebel was a bomb-making expert of the NPA.

Soldiers were able to recover an M16 rifle at the encounter site.

While the soldiers were pursuing the NPA group, they encountered another group of rebels in Sitio Bayhutao, Barangay Banglay at about 1:45 pm on Monday.

Ingente said one soldier was wounded after a 20-minute firefight. The soldier, whom Ingente did not identify, is currently recuperating at the military hospital in Camp Evangelista, this city.

After the brief gunfight, the soldiers were able to discover makeshift bunkers at the second encounter site. Ingente said the makeshift camp could hold an estimated 50 combatants.

Soldiers recovered from the second encounter site an M203 grenade launcher, a 12-gauge shotgun, an M635 carbine, an air gun, various ammunition, a sniper scope, three backpacks with personal belongings and subversive documents. (nitz arancon)
