The League of Filipino Students-Northern Mindanao (LFS-NMR) condemned what they called red-tagging of their chairperson of the Philippine National Police-Special Action Forces (PNP-SAF) during its Regional Youth Leadership Training at Lower Bicutan, Taguig on June 23-24.

In an emailed statement yesterday, the group claimed that the police used a photo of the LFS NMR’s chairperson, Kristine Cabardo, as part of their presentation during their input on Violent Extremism in the ranks of the youth.

“Their action is clearly one of the dirty tactics among the armed personnel of the state to discredit the legitimate legal organizations,” reads part of their statement.

Cabardo added that this incident is not the first time that LFS and its members have been tagged as part of the armed-wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, the New People’s Army.

“We in LFS-NMR will be asserting our democratic rights and file for an investigation of the said incident, especially with the continuing harassment worsened by martial law in Mindanao; and the massive crackdown against activists,” said Cabardo.

She said the incident sends a chilling effect to citizens who fight for their democratic rights such as free education, genuine land reform, and national industrialization.

“No matter how desperate the moves of the state, the youth will never be brainwashed by mercenary institutions like the PNP-SAF. Even in their own ranks and activities, the participants questioned the use of such photo and red-tagging of our organization,” Cabardo said. (cbc)
