HOMEGROWN  lawyer Patricio “Pipo” Bernales has assumed as the new regional director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for northern Mindanao.

Bernales, given the new assignment by NBI director Dante Gierran, replaced Hans Barbaso who served as acting regional director for nearly two years.

Barbaso would serve as Bernales’ assistant director.

Bernales, who hails from Bukidnon, started his career in the NBI as an agent here, and then rose to become the bureau’s director for Region 7 based in Cebu City. He served in Cebu for two years before he was named NBI director for Region 10.

He also briefly served in the NBI regional office in Caraga, and over a year on Koronadal.

His wife Tess Rana-Bernales is the presiding judge of one the regional courts here.
