BUTUAN City – A sports utility vehicle and two motorcycles collided, killing two people and badly hurting another in Barangay Ampayon here yesterday morning.

Investigators said a man who drove one of the ill-fated motorcycles and his passenger died while another who drove the second motorcycle was badly injured in the collision that took place at around 5:46 am along the highway in Purok 6, Ampayon.

Senior Insp. Henry Samillano said the accident involved a red Mitsubishi Montero SUV with license plates AAN-2779 owned and driven by Vicente Torres Pag-ong, 47, of Guingona Subdivision.

Samillano said Torres was driving towards the direction of Surigao City when it swerved towards the opposing lane and collided with the two oncoming motorcycles.

One of the ill-fated motorcycles was a Honda XRM 125cc motorcycle owned and driven by Raul Bas del Rosario, 59, of Canlanipa Homes, Surigao City. He died with his passenger Luz Cabasagan of Barangay 5, Cabadbaran City.

Police photographs show that Rosario’s body slammed directly into the hood while Cabasagan’s body was thrown off the motorcycle. They were declared dead at the Butuan Medical Center.

Samillano  said the other motorcycle was a Rusi driven by Ricky Castillo Epis of Purok 6, Katugasan, Cabadbaran City. Epis was thrown off and was badly hurt.

Investigators said there was a white Nissan Navarra pick-up truck with license plates FOD-665 that was slightly scratched.

Witnesses said the pick-up truck and the Montero SUV were overspeeding.
