MAYOR Oscar Moreno over the weekend urged the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office to ensure that those behind the shooting death of a former mayor in Bukidnon on Saturday are brought to justice the soonest even as he condemned the killing as a “senseless and barbaric” act committed while Cagayanons were preparing for the Christmas celebration.

Moreno said he told city police director Senior Supt. Nelson Aganon to make sure that the murder case be solved immediately and “with the identification and capture of the perpetrators and anyone behind them.”

Motorcycleiding gunmen pumped a bullet into the head of former Kadingilan town mayor Joelito “Jukens” Jacosalem Talaid after he bought fruits at Lane 101 in upper Carmen, near the Hall of Justice, at around 9:39 am Saturday.

The 43-year-old Talaid, who lived at Pueblo de Oro, owned the firm Jukens Builders and Trade that developed subdivisions in Barangay Pagatpat here, Ala-e in Manolo Fortich and Dangcagan in Bukidnon, and Cotabato.

Moreno condemned the gun attack.

“Cruel and treacherous acts like this killing have no place whatsoever in any decent and peace-loving community especially in  special seasons like  Christmas,” Moreno said.

He also called upon anyone who may have useful information that may lead to the case’s immediate solution to come forward.

“We shall coordinate closely with the police and other law enforcement authorities on the formation of composite groups to expedite the case resolution,” Moreno said.

Senior Insp. Excyllo Alcantara, Carmen police chief, said Talaid had just returned to his black pickup truck with fruits and was about to leave when two men, riding a red motorcycle, came and fired shots at him.

Talaid died while he was on the driver’s seat.

Witnesses told the police the the assailants wore jackets and caps and they fled towards the direction of Barangay Lumbia.

Dr. Christian Caballes of the Scene of the Crime Operatives said the head shot was fatal.

Caballes said the murder weapons was a caliber .45 pistol.

Crime scene investigators found two spent bullets — one inside Talaid’s pickup truck and another on the ground. These, he said, were being examined in a laboratory.

Police said Talaid had a caliber .45 pistol with him but he was not able to use this. Inside his vehicle were some money, including loose change, vegetables, fruits, a cellphone, T-shirt, bag, necklace, slippers and bullets for his pistol.

Alcantara said police have yet to determine the otive for the killing, and would be examining CCTV recordings in the hope of identifying the gunmen.
