According to Dr. Imer Dante Occeña, a veterinarian from the Bureau of Animal Industry-Quarantine Services, ASF is a disease which originated from Africa, endemic to their wild hogs and slowly spreading to other countries.

“This disease is hemorrhagic which causes internal bleeding exclusive only to pigs,” he added.

Department of Agriculture clarifies this infection has not yet infiltrated hogs in the country but there have been observed in 13 countries already.

These are from Africa, Europe, and Asia, with China being the nearest. This is not infectious to people but we need public awareness because this will give big impact to our Hog Industry, DA-10 explained.

One of the measures for Quarantine Service is they do not import from ASF affected countries.

Walay angay kahadlokan ang kumakaon sa karne. First and foremost dili ni siya mutakod sa tao and then wala pa nakasulod sa Pilipinas, busa ato karong gipahingusgan nga dili gyud makasulod,” said Dr. Angelita Barcelona, Director of NMIS-10.

Department of Agriculture has a collaborative effort to inspect frozen products or imported products.

NMIS conducts the inspection to make sure the quality of the meat is safe. (pia x)
