ALTHOUGH the Northern Mindanao delegation ranked eight overall among 17 regions in the recently concluded 67th edition of Palarong Pambansa which Davao City hosted, the results showed that the region excelled in four sports events.
Region 10, with “Northmin Stars” as moniker, produced champions in elementary levels for boys in baseball, boxing, sepak takraw and swimming, hence most of the region’s gold medals came from these events, said Department of Education 10’s human resource development chief Raymund Antolo Tuesday.
Deped-10, under regional director Arturo Bayocot, also set a national record being the first-ever champion in Larong Pinoy, bagging three gold and a bronze medal in kadang-kadang, karera ng sako, hilaan ng lubid, and patintero—alldistinctively Filipino indigenous games.
“This is the second time that Region 10 will represent the country in the Asia-Pacific Middle East Baseball League Series in Hwaseong, South Korea in June this year,” Antolo told the Gold Star Daily.
Misamis Occidental’s Jimenez Central School pupil Criz Andrei Anoya was adjudged Palarong Pambansa finals most valuable player for baseball.
Boxing elementary boys also contributed to Region 10’s medal haul with four golds and a silver medal, from various schools divisions, to emerge as overall champion.
Sepak takraw players from Cagayan de Oro’s Bonbon Elementary School once again took the elusive two gold medals as champion, a feat the same school achieved four years ago.
Northmin Stars’ swimmers pocketed five gold, five silver and two bronze medals and emerged champion as well, with freestyle double-gold finisher Nimrod Montera of Ozamiz City’s La Salle University Integrated School.
Other gold medalists, in individual events, were Jamaica Kate Saligan in 400-meter hurdles girls and Lunale Jorie Sumatra in taekwondo light middleweight secondary girls.
Medal tally posted on Deped-10 Facebook wall showed Region 10 collected 17 gold, 27 silver and 26 bronze medals in the week-long multi-sports competition that ended May 4 this year.
This, aside from para-games where Northern Mindanao athletes reaped three gold, three silver and two bronze medals.
National Capital Region, once again for the nth time, romped off with the overall championship honors with a whooping 86-71-56 medal harvest.
