The Silay, Negros Occidental-born Severino finished ahead of Grandmasters Darwin Laylo and Rogelio Antonio Jr. in the 500-man field to top the two-day Surigao Open Fiesta Online Chess Tournament 2021 concluded last Saturday.
“For me, tsamba lang kini nga achievement so, i-share nato ang blessings to our fellow chess players around the country,” said Urbiztondo, who was first conferred of the AIM title in 2020 by Fédération Internationale des Échecs (Fide) President Arkady Dvorkovich.
“Manny should better off retire both in boxing and politics. Boxing is a young man’s game and politics is the dirtiest game in the world. Why not enjoy the wealth and fortune after years of sacrifice at the expense of your own life and limb because of extreme poverty. If not of poverty just like Manny, I will never risk my face to be punched atop the ring,” said the now 80-year-old Barrientos in an interview at his house in Mahogany St., Barangay Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City.
This, after the Philippine Team got disqualified from the ongoing World Olympiad online tournament after one of its players, a minor aged 13 years old, was allegedly caught cheating by using engine assistance.
“We already buried the hatchet as I always visited bai (Elorde) in Manila at the time when he was seriously ill with lung cancer. When he was still in good shape, he made an effort to come here to Cagayan de Oro for a week-long vacation. They (Elordes) are my extended family in Manila. I don’t know I have no vices then, but after forging intimate relations with bai I’ve also learned to smoke cigarettes. Maybe I’m quite sentimental for old time’s sake," Barrientos shared.
