THE oldest press club in the Philippines has joined the media community in calling out the Marcos administration to arrest the remaining accused of the Ampatuan Massacre who are still at large since 13 years ago.

In a statement issued today, Cagayan de Oro Press Club president Frank Mendez said the massacre should serve as a stark reminder of how “brittle” democracy is in the country.

“We call on law enforcement agencies to arrest the convicts of the Ampatuan Massacre who remained at large,” the statement reads in part.

The club also called on government and civil societies to recognize the role of a free and independent press in a democratic republic.

“We call on stakeholders to join with the media community in establishing protection for the safety of our workers and journalists in performing their duties,” the statement reads. (CBC)
