    A poke in the arm

David Haldane writes: I leave it to others to debate the ethics of how she got there. For now I have but one thing to say: welcome, my friend, to the world’s most exclusive club.

    Second American Revolution?

David Haldane writes: As thousands of protestors converged on the US capitol building in Washington, D.C., surprised police scrambled to respond. But it was too little, too late, and what started as a protest quickly spiraled into something resembling an insurrection. The upshot: Congress interrupted, five people dead and calls for the second impeachment of President Donald Trump—said to have encouraged the rioters in a speech—just days before his term ends.

    Landlocked

David Haldane writes: The official announcement came on New Year’s Day. “Ban on Entry of Travelers from the United States,” screamed the headline of a press release issued by the US Embassy in Manila.

    Adira in the morning

David Haldane writes: A gentle tapping on the shoulder. That’s how my mornings begin in these uncertain times. Eventually, I open my eyes. And behold the radiant smile of my 9-month-old daughter, Adira, welcoming me to a brand-new day. Just as we welcomed her not long ago.

    The new Covid elite

David Haldane writes: So far, I have noticed no change. She is still the lovely, sweet-tempered woman I married more than a decade ago. When I ask a question, she answers it thoughtfully. And when I express my fears, she quickly assuages them.

    The pod

David Haldane writes: In the culture of resistance, they call them secret cells. Small circles of like-minded comrades with little or no connection to outsiders, these tiny social creations have historically aided such radical causes as communist insurgency, extreme environmentalism, animal liberation, white nationalism, true anti-fascism and Islamic terrorism.

    Ode to the Joshua Tree

David Haldane writes: The prophet’s name was Joshua, a man who reportedly stretched his arms upward towards heaven, beseeching God to hold the sun still until the Israelites could defeat the Kings of Gibeon. The Lord listened, assuring a Hebrew victory. And so the Jews continued their long march through the desert to the Promised Land.

    For singing out loud

David Haldane writes: The instructions couldn’t have been clearer. Reacting to an unprecedented spike in coronavirus cases just before Thanksgiving, the Governor of California declared a state of emergency. To counter the burgeoning crisis, he announced, certain edicts would have to be followed: cancel all travel, limit the length and size of holiday gatherings, and practice social distancing. Oh yes, and refrain from shouting, chanting or singing.
