MINISTRY of Trade, Investments and Tourism’s (MTIT) Bangsamoro Halal Board (BHB) recently organized a workshop in Davao City to develop a comprehensive plan for the Bangsamoro Halal industry.

The 6-year Bangsamoro Halal Development Plan 2024-2029, in collaboration with the Bangsamoro Planning and Development Authority (BPDA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN-FAO), aims to boost the region’s economy by producing Halal products and services that meet market standards and cater to local and global markets.

During the workshop, Minister Abu Amri Taddik highlighted the importance of promoting and practicing Halal within the Bangsamoro Government, stating that the collective output of the workshop would shape the Halal roadmap in the region.

BPDA Director-General Engr. Mohajirin Ali emphasized the need for Halal compliance among enterprises and industries in the region to tap into broader markets.

The workshop also aimed to harmonize the Halal industry within the BIMP-EAGA member countries (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area).

This collaboration seeks to optimize resource allocation and enhance coordination for the Bangsamoro Government’s Halal efforts.

While the Bangsamoro region is in the process of formulating the Halal Development Plan, Atty. Sukarno Abas clarified that the region is currently unable to certify or accredit any Halal industries or establishments.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the United Nations System have expressed their commitment to collaborate and support the creation of an inclusive, innovative, competitive, resilient, and sustainable economy in the Bangsamoro region.

This collaboration aims to provide opportunities for work and livelihood within the region while harnessing the potential of the global market and the BIMP-EAGA corridor.

During the workshop, Dante Eleuterio, Head of the UN-FAO Mindanao Sub-Office, reaffirmed UN-FAO’s commitment to supporting the transition period of the Bangsamoro Government.

Their aim is to create more opportunities for farmers and fisherfolk, promote sustainable food security, economic progress, and better nutrition in the region.

The workshop witnessed the participation of over 50 planners from various BARMM ministries, offices, and agencies, as well as representatives from development partners, business and consumer sectors, and academia.
