IN a move directed towards tackling the global climate crisis, the Philippine Movement for Climate Justice (PMCJ), the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines (USTP), and the Institute of Power Sector Economics (IPSEc) have inked a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). This landmark agreement aims to spearhead renewable energy initiatives in Misamis Oriental, Philippines.

The signing of the MOA signifies a unified front among PMCJ, USTP, and IPSEc to address the imperative need for sustainable energy solutions in the region. With a focus on pooling their expertise and resources, the parties aim to achieve several pivotal objectives:

a.) Development of a Renewable Energy Roadmap and Investment Plan: Crafting a comprehensive strategy to steer Misamis Oriental towards renewable energy adoption.
b.) Building Local Capacity: Empowering local communities with the requisite knowledge and resources to embrace renewable energy options while considering environmental factors.
c.) Guidance for Government Officials: Furnishing local government units with directives for investing in renewable energy projects and ensuring adherence to energy efficiency laws.

Ian Rivera, National Coordinator of PMCJ, expressed confidence in the partnership, affirming, “This collaboration between PMCJ, USTP, Agropolis, and IPSEC will make available not less than 1 GW of renewables for the province. This is Misamis Oriental’s response to the global call for climate action and the transition away from fossil fuels.”

Rivera also disclosed plans for a Renewable Energy and Investment Summit by year-end, emphasizing the commitment to proactive change in the region.

Each signatory to the agreement has committed to fulfilling specific roles and responsibilities:

a.) PMCJ will oversee logistical support, coordinate research endeavors, and ensure relevant personnel engagement.
b.) USTP will deploy engineers and personnel for joint research, grant access to facilities, and support the Renewable Energy Investment Plan.
c.) IPSEc will lend industry insights, collaborate on research endeavors, and provide technical counsel for the Local Energy Plan.

Clint Django G. Pacana, Manager of Agropolis S & T Park, underscored the collaboration’s significance, remarking, “Today marks a pivotal moment in our collective pursuit of sustainable energy solutions for Misamis Oriental.”

The signing ceremony, attended by key representatives from PMCJ, USTP, IPSEc, and Agropolis S & T Park, signals a concerted endeavor to promote renewable energy development and sustainability in Misamis Oriental.

Comprising 150 national networks, alliances, and local organizations, PMCJ is committed to advancing climate justice solutions amidst the pressing climate crisis.
