THE earth shook powerfully, and people almost fell to the ground when an earthquake hit Davao City at around 4:30 pm today.
At a mall in Lanang, vehicles parked in the basement were shaken sideways, with their wheels making shrill squeaking sounds. Mallgoers were quickly evacuated outside in an orderly manner, with no stampede happening.
Heavy traffic buildup occurred outside the mall as vehicles tried to exit the mall parking area.
The earthquake magnitude was recorded at 7.2 30 kilometers South 81 degrees West south of General Santos City and seaward from the Municipality of Glan, Sarangani Province.
The whole of Sarangani province has experienced a power outage, as well as parts of Davao serviced by distribution utility Dasureco.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, on their website, advises the public that there is no tsunami threat based on the available data.
