In his letter of resignation addressed to Mayor Oscar Moreno, dated Dec. 23, 2019, City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Department overseer Mario Verner Monsanto said President Duterte offered him the position of assistant secretary in the Office of the President. He accepted it and assumed office in Malacañang Jan. 2.

Monsanto thanked Moreno for giving him the opportunity to serve the city for six years.

Monsanto is a brother of Msgr. Rey Monsanto, parish priest of Camaman-an and part-time faculty at the St. Vianney Theological Seminary.

“This job will present bigger challenges for me and probably will take me to other places. Cagayan de Oro will remain to be number one in my heart,” Monsanto’s letter reads.

Moreno hired Monsanto in 2013 and was given the task of organizing the city disaster risk reduction and response team to ensure the tragedy that befell the city in the aftermath of typhoon “Sendong” in 2010 to happen again.

“Thank you for the support you have thrown to me and to the task I have been doing since 2013,” said Monsanto.

However, Monsanto leaves his office with the unfinished plan of building an emergency operation center which he said would have been a great legacy to leave for Moreno.

“A dream up to this date and will remain as such until the day when it shall have gathered support from other members of your team.  But please allow me to still help in its creation even if I am no longer officially connected with your team,” Monsanto said.

However, Monsanto said he is happy to leave his office knowing that his next job will also be beneficial to the residents of the city and the rest of the country, as well.

“I am not resigning for nothing as I will be assuming another job that will not only benefit the residents of Cagayan de Oro but other residents of other (local governments) in other parts of the country as well,” his letter reads.

Monsanto added he is also happy that he will be leaving a credible disaster risk reduction and response organization that can be of service not only to your constituency, the people of Cagayan de Oro city but also to the constituents of other local governments in Northern Mindanao.

“I would like to think, that I have complied with your orders. Therefore, I am happy to note that I will be leaving behind a credible,” Monsanto said in his letter.
