BUTUAN City – Officials from different barangays here are busy packing relief goods as steps in preparing its residents for the effects of the 2019 novel coronavirus disease community quarantine. Several small businesses here have begun to close temporarily across this city since Thursday.

Menchie D. Rosario, chairperson of Barangay Libertad said they are aiming to pack a total of 1,000 food packs as relief goods for their residents.

“We have seen several small business owners and those working on a daily basis affected by the decrease in sales and revenue. So we decided to pack relief goods for people who have less and those who can’t afford to buy basic daily needs. We hope to push beyond 1,000 packs and reach 1,500,” said Rosario.

Rosario noted that each relief pack has 2-kilos of rice, two packs of instant noodles, two cans of sardines and 1/4 brown sugar.  

Barangay Diego Silang situated in the center of the city’s business district finished packing their packs, Thursday afternoon and hopes to distribute around 387 packs in their area.

“We started packing early in the morning with 2-kilos of rice, two packs of noodles, can of sardines, medical-surgical mask and six tablets of vitamin C,” said Florita V. Montilla, barangay chairperson of Diego Silang.

Several other barangays in Butuan City have indicated the same initiatives addressing to help families who are affected by the crisis.
