A NURSE from Misamis Occidental has become the first health worker in Region 10 to test positive for Covid-19.

Dr. Adriano Suba-an, regional director of the Department of Health, yesterday said the female nurse, a resident of Tudela town, became the Northern Mindanao’s 13th Covid-19 case and the first recorded local transmission in Region 10.

Suba-an said that of the 13, only one is hospital-confined, two are in isolation units, five had recovered while the remaining five died.

“Let’s fill the heavens with prayers,” Misamis Occidental Gov. Philip Tan urged his constituents after he learned about his province’s third Covid-19 case.

Tan said the nurse’s specimens were taken for testing on April 18 after she had direct contact with a 68-year-old man from Tudela who died in his sleep two weeks ago.

The province’s first Covid patient, a 45-year old seaman from Jimenez has already recovered.

Ozamiz Mayor Sancho Oaminal appealed for strict observance of health protocols and emphasized that risks are higher now due to the possibility of local transmission.

“This is very sad news,” said Oaminal.

A night before, Oaminal was with Tan and other government officials at the Ozamiz seaport for the arrival of five repatriated seafarers.

On Wednesday morning, one of five was found to have contracted Covid-19 through a rapid test. He had to be swabbed for confirmatory tests and be confined at the Ozamiz-based and state-run Mayor Hilarion A. Ramiro Sr. Medical Center. (Uriel C. Quilinguing)
