AN additional vaccination site set up in an elementary school in Barangay Bugo is projected to vaccinate 500 persons daily to augment Cagayan de Oro City Hall’s target of 8,000 to 10,000 vaccinations daily, the City Health Office (CHO) said yesterday.

“We’re targeting at least 500 vaccinations (each in Barangay Bugo and two other barangay vaccination sites) but we’re not limiting it to that number. Based on our analysis, if we can vaccinate 500 per barangay vaccination site plus an additional 1,500 vaccinations in each of the mega-site vaccination venues set up in the city’s malls then we can reach that daily average of 8,000 to 8,500 vaccinations,” CHO medical officer Dr. Ted Yu said.

City Hall operates the mega vaccination sites in two SM malls, one in Limketkai Mall and in City Mall Bulua. The mega-vaccination site in Centrio Ayala Mall is handled by the Department of Health (DOH-10) regional office through the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC). Two barangay vaccination sites in Cugman and Bulua were set up late last month as City Hall expects to receive a substantial share of vaccines from the national government.

On Monday, presidential spokesman Harry Roque confirmed that President Rodrigo Duterte gave the go-signal to vaccinate the country’s general population regardless of category by October owing to the substantial stocks of vaccines received by the country.

“That’s why it’s important that if we have five mega-vaccination sites that can conduct 1,500 vaccinations each that’s good for 7,000 vaccinations daily. Plus an additional 500 each from three barangays, that would give us 9,000 vaccinations,” Dr. Yu said.

Dr. Yu said they’re calling on Kagay-anons to get themselves vaccinated at the soonest possible time so Cagayan de Oro City can reach herd immunity late this year or early next year. When asked if the city’s vaccination rate helped reduce the city’s daily Covid-19 cases to double digits, Dr. Yu said it’s one of the factors that contributed to the decline.

“There are different factors but vaccination is a significant factor. Cagayan de Oro City leads northern Mindanao in vaccinations,” he said.

Dr. Yu, part of the Data Management group of City Hall’s Vaccination Operations Center, said about 44 percent of city residents received their first dose while 32 to 33 percent already completed their second dose.

Cagayan de Oro City needs to vaccinate more than 518,000 or about 70 to 75 percent of its total estimated population of more than 720,000 to achieve herd immunity. Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno said they’re targeting to achieve herd immunity within this year. (Stephen Capillas of City Information Office)
