FLAGGING down an erring driver, then giving a devil-may-care chase, followed by a sudden screech upfront after overtaking a speeding truck like in a thrilling movie scene, will always be in the stunt repertoire of gutsy cum adventure-loving highway cops.
Not this time anymore after a recent incident in Butuan City set bad precedence that ended the life of a policeman in a horrifying manner.
In pulling off a similar stunt, Psmgt Amado Alcantara of the PNP-HPG 13 was apparently dragged inside the interior of a 10-wheeler Fuso wing van, whose driver presumably got rattled and failed to apply a break when the victim tried to cut him off the Ampayon highway of Butuan City.
“Napasok siya sa i-beam sa usa ka Fuso wing van. Sumala pa sa nakasaksi gilakag sa maong pulis ang wing van nga naka motorsiklo ug kalit niya kini nga gi cut arun unta pahunungon apan nalamon siya sa ilalom,” reported one anchorman of RMN-dxBC Butuan 693.
“Dili pa klaro nganong nalamon siya sa ilalom sa sakyanan. Gidala sa tambalanan ang biktima apan nakabsan kini sa kinabuhi. Wala pay pahayag ang driver sa trak nga gidala na sa police station ug nagapadayon pa ang imbestigasyon,” another reporter Nelson Palaran announced via 103.7 SF Radio Philippines.
In a later interview, the truck driver Vincent Fritz Villaceran, 45, of Tagum City said he was unaware that somebody had given him a chase and tried to overtake.
“Ang ako na lang nabantayan nga naay nilagapak sa ilalom sa among sakyanan,” said Villaceran over RMN-dxXBC Butuan.
Villaceran denied that he hurdled any checkpoint along the way, explaining that he just casually passed through the weighbridge as he only had a light 17-ton of AP parcels cargo.
“Gaan ra among kargada maong nideretso ra ‘mi sa weight bridge. Wala nako siya nabantayan,” said the driver, who is facing imprisonment.
Yesterday night, a motorcycle driver also met his untimely demise when he hit a plastic barrier and overturned along the superhighway of Lemon, Butuan City, shortly before 9 pm.
Witnesses said the ill-fated victim, who was not identified immediately, was negotiating in the accident-prone area of the under-repair highway when he encountered the tragedy.
