WITH today’s tight economy, City Councilor George Goking, chair of the City Council’s committee on trade and commerce on Wednesday reminded Cagay-anons to look for ways to save money and cut expenses.
In this time of oil crisis and the pandemic, he even reminded the public to engage in backyard gardening, a potential means to increase confidence in food safety and security
He said by growing a garden has the potential to reduce the amount of money spent on groceries and even in other commodities.
He prompted the public to continue to conserve funds and resources to prepare for the continued increase in fuel prices in the turmoil in Russia and Ukraine.
The potential price pressures from rising oil prices are not limited to the production stage of food commodities, according to Goking.
“Practically, higher energy costs may also raise the cost of food processing, food packaging and distribution,” Goking said.
“It is good to prepare it especially with food as it is also the main need of the people,” adding that growing vegetables in individual fields such as kalamonggay, alugbati, okra, and beans is one of the ways to reduce daily expenses.
He said gardening is one of the ways to help with today’s adversity.
“It is necessary to be prepared for the increase in the price of oil as it can no longer be restrained due to events,” Goking said.
He added that cooperation and understanding of the people is one of the necessities in this time of hardship.
So, the answer to the above question he said is “yes” – if done correctly.
While saving money may be one of the benefits to growing a vegetable garden – let’s not forget that there are others as well, he said. (Ben Balce)
