WHILE Cagayan de Oro City is nearing the 30 percent threshold for booster shots among Kagay-anons, Mayor Oscar Moreno is hopeful that the city reaches that level before he steps down from office at noon on June 30.

“Hopefully our vaccination (with respect to booster shots) would continue to go up. While 862 vaccinations for one day (are) good, our goal is for the city to reach its target of first booster shots by over 30 percent. (As of Tuesday, May 31) we reached 26.57 which is higher than the previous 26.51 last Monday. So we hope to inch closer to 27 percent tomorrow (Wednesday),” Moreno said.

During Tuesday afternoon’s City Hall press briefing, Moreno asked City Health Office (CHO) medical officer, Dr. Ted Yu Jr., about the booster shot campaign of Metro Manila and other local governments in comparison to Cagayan de Oro City.

“Metro Manila is now at 32 to 33 percent (of their booster shot campaign),” Dr. Yu told Moreno.

Dr. Yu also assured Moreno that the city’s vaccine supply remains sufficient and available to city residents and non-Cagayan de Oro City residents wishing to avail of the vaccines. As of May 30, Cagayan de Oro City Hall administered the first booster shots to 139,217 residents, or 26.57 percent. For children aged five to 11 years old, about 16,312 received their second dose, or 17.76 percent.

The Department of Health set a target of 91,841 children in Cagayan de Oro City belonging to the 5-11 years old age group for complete vaccination.

When asked by Mayor Moreno about the status of the city’s second booster shot campaign, Dr. Yu said the city administered 1,906-second booster shots to residents as of May 30, or an average of 200 daily.

This is 100 shots lower than the 300 first booster shots administered on the same day, Dr. Yu said.

“I hope that we can still further improve our vaccination campaign but we need the cooperation of the people. Without the people’s cooperation, we won’t sustain our success. Right now, we have five patients confined at the Covid-19 ward of (Northern Mindanao Medical Center),” Moreno said.

The five patients include three natives of Misamis Oriental province, one from Agusan del Sur province, and one female Cagayan de Oro City resident.

Established as the Covid-19 referral hospital of northern Mindanao, the NMMC recently had zero Covid-19 patients due to rising vaccination rates in Region 10.

“The other four are unvaccinated while the female city resident is pregnant and cannot be vaccinated,” Dr. Yu said. (Stephen Capillas of City Information Office)
