Jay Durias

To many, Jay Durias of South Border is a renowned singer, songwriter, record producer, and arranger. To me, Jay is a fellow Dabawenyo, a genius, a super talented artist, and a friend. He is my “bai Jay.” His mellifluous voice has soothed my soul and uplifted my spirit numerous times.

So, naturally, after years of living in New York and then waiting some more (thanks to the pandemic), I couldn’t and wouldn’t miss his recent birthday in Makati for the world!

Along with my lovely dear friends and fellow SB Boarders (long story short – we all met back when online message boards were still a thing…don’t ask exactly when that was!) Joyce, Iza, and Crissa (and hubby Joel, now an honorary Boarder and our group’s official photographer), I had the most beautiful time at Jay’s birthday gig, which was truly a night to remember. Helping Jay and South Border that night were Luke Mejares, Duncan Ramos, Ice Seguerra, and Janine Tenoso. Jay’s children, Khalil and Jaydee, both of whom obviously inherited their father’s magic, also performed that night, much to the delight of the sold-out crowd. I later spotted Jay’s better half, Helene. Of course, South Border’s management team was also busy that night. It was really good to see Sharon, Kaye, Jason, Ate Wing, Bong et al.

Aside from playing some of South Border’s biggest hits, Jay also played OPM favorites. The gig ended on a high note and in a way only South Border can. Now if you find yourself in Manila or if you hear there’s a South Border gig near you, you simply have to catch them live. Your soul may also need some soothing.

Speaking of soothing, my favorite footwear these days is my customized pair of Native shoes. I have several Natives and not only are these the lightest pairs in the world, but they’re also absolutely comfortable to wear. Walking with my Natives on is soothing to my soles (and to yours, for sure)

I actually customized my latest pair of Native shoes myself, with the help of the cool folks over at the Native Ayala Mall Centrio branch. One shoe bore my name and the other one, well, of course, highlighted my love for Korean boy band, BTS. Yes, I’m a proud ARMY! I wear my pair frequently and I always receive compliments and questions! Maybe Native should make events where customers can customize their pairs a regular thing. What do you think?

Before I end this column comeback of sorts, I’d like to thank my Mindanao Gold Star Daily family for this opportunity to write again. I’ve missed sharing my adventures! Please feel free to follow me on Facebook.com/MindanaoanBlogger and send comments. Cheers!
