LONG inactive for chess skirmishes, police investigator Santiago ‘Sonny’ Lumancas seemed contented to serve as a chaperon for his five children playing in a chess competition.

But in the recently-held 6th Araw Ng Lumbia Chess Tournament in Cagayan de Oro, the grizzled Lumancas found himself competing along with his kids where he managed to flash his old brilliance.

The 49-year-old Lumancas racked up five-straight wins then split the point with his son, James Michael in the sixth and final round to secure the P3,000 top purse and the championship trophy with his total score of 5.5 points.

“Uban-uban lang ko sa mga bata para ma-develop ilang chess skills, medyo na-bored niapil naka tsamba lang,” said Lumancas, whose other children James Joseph, Santiago IV, James Rafael and Maria Teresa have also competed.

Pastor Edward Roperos tallied five points for a solo second-place worth P2,000 as Corpus Christi standout Lorebina Carrasco II edged out two other 4.5-pointers in the Bucholz tiebreaker to snare the P1,000 third prize.

Making it to the top-10 list are Bernard Collera and James Michael Lumancas with 4.5 points each, Jonathan Ayo, Enrique Abarquez Jr, Isacar Ragasajo, and Raymundo Yana, all at 4 points, and James Joseph Lumancas with 3.5 markers to show.

Around 30 players who are bonafide residents of Barangay Lumbia took part in the day-long chessfest organized by the Barangay Lumbia Council with the all-out support of village chair Alexander Torralba.

According to Fide National Arbiter Lorenzo Cuizon Jr, the Lumbia Council had already informed tournament director Aerol Torralba that they’re lining up of another interesting chess event in the near future.

Mas dagko pa ang premyo,” Cuizon later told Gold Star Daily.
