CAGAYAN de Oro City Hall is mobilizing its bureaucracy and resources to help the 425 families displaced by yesterday’s flash floods in Barangays Bugo and Puerto, city officials said today.

“We’re asking the families if they can ask from their barangay health center for prophylaxis tablets to avoid contracting leptospirosis (a bacterial disease),” said City Health Office (CHO) chief Dr. Rachel Dilla during Monday’s Covid-19 response press briefing.

Of the 425 affected families, about 285 families are residents of Barangay Bugo and 140 families are residents of Barangay Puerto.

Data by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) showed that 34 houses sustained damages while three were destroyed by last Sunday’s flash floods.

Citing a report from the local office of the state weather bureau Pag-asa, the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Department (CDRRMD) said localized thunderstorms caused Sunday’s flash floods in Barangays Bugo and Puerto.

Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy issued an executive order yesterday evening suspending classes in public and private schools in Barangays Bugo and Puerto in the wake of the flash floods.

Two evacuation centers housed the 285 families displaced in Barangay Bugo while the 140 displaced families or 519 persons were staying at the Puerto covered court.

During Monday morning’s flag-raising program, City Administrator Roy Hilario Raagas called on City Hall’s bureaucracy to give what they can to the displaced families.

“On behalf of Mayor Klarex, we’re asking those (who can spare what they can to) please send your donations to the CSWDO to augment the resources to be allocated by City Hall,” Raagas said in Visayan.

Among the essentials asked for are hygiene kits (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, towels, and sanitary napkins), underwear, clothes, and milk for children.

The CSWDO said Kagay-anons can send their donations to their office at their City Hall office during office hours from 8 am to 5 pm.

They can also send their donations directly to the evacuation centers in Bugo National High School, Cagayan de Oro Bugo School of Arts and Trades, Suntingon Elementary School, and Barangay Puerto covered court.
