THOUGH Cagayan de Oro City’s daily Covid-19 case count remains manageable for now, the City Health Office (CHO) urged residents to complete their vaccine dosage to ensure their protection from the virus.

“(On) Oct. 14, the city logged eight new cases with nine recovered but the following day, the city logged 14 new cases marking the first time in quite a while that we logged double-digit new cases in one day. And on Oct. 15, the city logged nine new cases with seven recoveries. So we should not be complacent nor overconfident,” said CHO chief Dr. Rachel Dilla during Monday’s press briefing.

Part of the reason for the slight spike in last Oct. 15’s cases could possibly be the waning protection of Kagay-anons who didn’t secure their booster shots, Dr. Dilla said.

“Right now, while it remains free we are appealing to all Kagay-anons who have yet to get boosted to secure their booster shots now. Getting boosted will improve our immune systems,” Dr. Dilla said.

CHO data showed that as of 10 pm on Oct. 18, Cagayan de Oro City logged 11 new cases and 52 active cases. Of that number, about 28 are admitted to the city’s private and public hospitals while 24 are confined in the city’s isolation facilities.

The city also recorded eight new recoveries. CHO resident epidemiologist Dr. Teodulfo Joselito Retuya said he hoped the slight spike won’t result in another surge of cases.

“Starting (on) Sept. 4-10, the city experienced daily single-digit cases (while active cases fluctuated between above 50 to as low as 33 cases). But the city’s daily new cases began going up again starting last Oct. 9 to 15 and last Oct. 16, the city logged nine new cases. So from Oct. 10 to 16 the city logged 64 new cases of which nine percent is reinfection and 91 percent or 58 cases are new cases,” Dr. Retuya said.

Dr. Retuya said most patients who recovered and were later confirmed to be reinfected don’t undergo swabbing after experiencing symptoms.

“Of the 64 that are confirmed to be positive for the Oct. 10 to 16 period about 11 of them are 10 percent traveled outside Cagayan de Oro City either for work or vacation…so we need to secure our booster shots for our protection from the virus,” Dr. Retuya said.
