UZBEKISTAN player Avasbek Ishbaev will have the chance to test Filipino chess strength in a Fide-Rated tourney that started today at the Limketkai Mall, Cagayan de Oro City.

Known in his country as a fast gunner in blitz and rapid play, Ishbaev has traveled all the way from Indonesia to duel it out with the tough Filipinos.

Foremost on the list are the chess machine from Manila, National Master David Elorta, and a bunch of so-called super non-masters Ellan Asuela, Kevin Arquero, Sherwin Tiu, Rommel Ganzon, Johnnel Balquin, Antonio Chavez Jr, Samson Lim.

Close to 100 pawnpushers registered to participate including Fide Master Nelson Villanueva of Bacolod and rising star Christian Gian Karlo Arca of Davao del Norte.

Dubbed Mr. & Mrs. Leo G. Wabe Sr Individual Standard and Team Tatluhan Blitz, the three-day chessfest stakes around P200,000 in total cash prizes plus trophies and medals.
