THEY’RE back. The Philippines’ leading motorcycle-hailing app Angkas is now running and back in operation in the busy streets of this city and in the hinterland barangays.

Angkas started operations in Cagayan de Oro, but the pandemic challenged their pilot operations in the City of Golden Friendship three years ago, prompting management to stop their operations.

David Brian Medrana, transport operations head, during a presscon at the Cove, announced the official comeback of their business operations in the city, supported by its 416 motorcycles.

Councilor Romeo Calizo, chairman of the committee on public utilities, and his vice chair Councilor Roger Abaday reiterated that the comeback of Angkas is a welcome development.

Angkas was based in Makati City and it was founded in 2016 by Singaporean Angeline Tham with the intention of beating the traffic-congested streets of the Philippines and saving precious time through ride-hailing.

Angkas’ drivers are provided free training by the company, and they go through background checks and skills assessment before being deployed, according to Medrana. Meanwhile, passengers are provided good quality helmets and disposable shower caps for their safety and comfort.

The company’s current CEO is George Royeca. Royeca is a staunch advocate of inclusive mobility and sustainable transport. Through his work, Royeca has created a movement to raise awareness of the plights of millions of Filipino motorcyclists.

“We would like the people of CDO to know that we are back to serve them,” Angkas operations head David Medrana said.

Angkas Medrana said it aims to provide safe, affordable, convenient ride and parcel transport services to the Filipino people anywhere in the country that our units could reach. Angkas intends to expand its operations nationwide.

He added that apart from providing responsible services, Angkas is also closely coordinating with concerned government agencies, Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) in particular, in its effort to professionalize its riders by equipping them with necessary driving skills.

“One of the aspirations of Angkas is to give opportunities to around 18 million motorcycle owners in the country to have a decent source of living out of their two wheels for them to better support and provide for the needs of their respective families,” Medrana said.

On several occasions, Angkas has proven itself to be a reliable government partner not only in transportation but also in supporting its activities, including its economic endeavors.

In the recent Sinulog-Santo Nino Festival in Cebu, Angkas provided attendees with free and reliable rides, participated in several events, and was one of the main sponsors of the festivities.

“That’s the Angkas way, a dependable but affordable ride for everybody,” Medrana said.
