I read an item on Facebook about the failure of Chowking to grant the correct senior citizen’s discount, and that the fast food chain management was summoned to appear before the senior citizens’ committee of the city council.

I wish I would have known about that public meeting or hearing because I would have attended it. I have had some bad experiences with the wrong discounting method of Chowking.

On at least three occasions, a Chowking cashier divided by three the total bill of what I ordered for two diners. This of course resulted in a reduction of the discount by some thirty percent. A small amount but utterly wrong!

Then on at least two occasions, a Chowking cashier in another outlet selected the lowest-priced item for discounting purposes even as it was not the item that I ate.

The business operators, Chowking in this instance, ought to know how the discount is computed.

For instance, if a senior citizen is in the company of some others, the total bill shall be divided by the number of diners and then deduct the discount for each senior citizen in the group. That is if the items ordered by each senior citizen cannot be definitely ascertained as the foods ordered are shared by the group.

If the foods ordered and eaten by the senior citizen can be determined, then the discount shall be deducted from those food items only.

Most of the excuses offered by Chowking when I complained to the supervisors were either it’s how the system was designed, or that the cashier erred in encoding the discount.

After having read the Facebook item, I thought maybe there is a deliberate to wrongly impute senior citizen discount by Chowking. This should also be looked into by the BIR.

Can we say then that Chowking is unfriendly to senior citizens?
