DRESSING up for work is not as simple as ABC. There are things to consider aside from yourself.

The foremost consideration is your company guidelines.

Most banks are conservative, but through the years, they have evolved and moved with the times. ‘Sign of the Times,’ as Harry Styles would sing.

For one, women are now allowed to wear slacks, whereas skirts used to be the norm.

Second, your personality and the industry you are in. These two should complement each other. You have to temper down your style if your line of business is on the conservative side.

I remember when my son was still a toddler, and I was busy dressing up. The conversation went:
Son: Mommy, where are you going?
Me: Office, of course!
Son: Where’s your (mimicking wearing a coat because I was still wearing a spaghetti strap shirt) jacket?
Me: Wait! I’m not ready yet. It’s there! (Starting to get pissed because I was running late.)

If you’re in an advertising company or somewhat related to it, maybe you can go overboard. You can even put on a different persona daily, depending on your mood. This is something I would love, wouldn’t you?

Third, the weather. For this one, you need Nick (you should know him) or a good weather app to avoid the same unfortunate incident that happened to me decades ago.

My son was in Kinder 1 at that time. The weather that day was gloomy, rainy, and cold. Perfect for a New Yorker-inspired outfit ― black turtleneck shirt, straight skirt, and knee-high black leather boots.

Everything went as planned until dismissal at around 11:30 am. The rain stopped, and the sun peeked! It was an OMG moment! I can no longer go home to change.

I folded the turtle neck and the sleeves. Unmindful of the whispers I heard from mothers and yayas, off I went to fetch my son. I walked as if it was cold and raining with my head held up high. Deep down, I was cursing.

Lastly, buy basic and classic clothes that can be mixed and matched.

Every time I buy, I always keep checking what goes well with it in my closet. It should match more than one item of what I have. That way, I can have different looks with one shirt or dress.

Those are my top considerations; what are yours? And yes, dressing up is both an art and a science.
