Telecom firms empower Zambo’s emergency responders

PLDT and its wireless arm Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) have turned over a PLDT-Smart Ligtas Kit, an all-in-one emergency communications package, to Zamboanga’s City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO), to support their organization’s disaster-resilience programs.

Earlier this year, heavy flooding affected the city, displacing thousands of Zamboangueños and highlighting the need for communication in times of disaster. “On behalf of the local government of Zamboanga City, we would like to express our appreciation and gratitude to PLDT and Smart for providing us with the Ligtas Kit. This would greatly help our disaster response efforts. We hope to continue this partnership for more years to come,” said Dr. Elmeir Apolinario, Head of Zamboanga’s CDRRMO.

Packed in a protective hard case, the PLDT-Smart Ligtas Kit comes with a solar panel, a rechargeable megaphone, crank radios, whistles, and flashlights. This also includes essential communication devices such as satellite phones (SmartSAT), a smartphone, and a Smart LTE pocket Wi-fi unit. With the Ligtas Kit, the CDRRMO can also conduct Libreng Tawag (free calls) to serve the communication needs of evacuees should a disaster hit.

Last year, the PLDT group conducted relief operations in Zamboanga City following the onslaught of severe tropical storm Paeng, distributing food packs to the victims to help them jumpstart their recovery from the calamity.

The PLDT and Smart Ligtas Kit is part of the group’s #SafeandSmart advocacy which promotes preparedness and immediate response through the continuous availability of communication services, mobile solutions, and activities to help communities mitigate disaster risks.
