NATIONAL Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) on Wednesday said it has achieved a significant milestone in its efforts to upgrade substations in Mindanao with the energization of a 100 Megavolt Ampere (MVA) power transformer at the NGCP’s Toril substation.
The Toril substation is responsible for providing electricity to Davao City through the Davao Light and Power Company.
“This achievement marks the first phase of NGCP’s Mindanao Substation Upgrading Project 2 (MSUP2),” said in an email sent by NGCP government relations and regional affairs lead specialist Mae Roselle L. Curiano.
Curiano said the NGCP aims to upgrade ten (10) substations in various areas including Lanao del Norte, Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, Agusan del Norte, Davao del Sur, North Cotabato, and South Cotabato.
“The installation of new power transformers in these substations will ensure uninterrupted power supply in the event of outages,” she said.
In addition to achieving N-1 compliance for the Mindanao grid, the Mindanao Substation Upgrading project will enhance the grid’s ability to withstand major system disturbances with minimal or no impact, as required by the Philippine Grid Code.
The first stage of the project involved the energization of power transformers with varying ratings in several NGCP substations, including Agus 6, Pitogo, Placer, NagaMin, General Santos, Polanco, Opol, Maramag, San Francisco, Bislig, and Kidapawan.
Moreover, capacitor banks were installed in several substations, including Butuan, Tacurong, Pitogo, General Santos, San Francisco, and Placer.
These upgrades according to Curiano will ensure that the substations are equipped to handle any potential outages or disturbances, thus improving the reliability of the Mindanao grid.
NGCP stated that the energization of the transformer in Toril, as well as the energization of high-voltage equipment and facilities all over Mindanao, will boost the grid’s overall reliability.
“These upgrading efforts are ultimately geared towards readying the grid for the influx of businesses, industries, and investments in the region,” Curiano said.
The second phase of MSUP has been filed with a cost of P5.56 Billion, while the first phase has an ERC-approved project cost of P5 Billion.
“The MSUP2 is again a testament to our commitment to expand and improve the country’s transmission grid, and to provide better services at a lower cost to the consumer,” Curiano said.
