THEY ran, not away from a fight, but rather to commemorate the Filipinos’ fight for independence.

Running enthusiasts in Cagayan de Oro took part in the 2023 Freedom Run on June 11, at the starting line along Capt. Vicente Roa St. at Centrio Ayala Mall at 4am. There were 3k, 5k, 10k, and 21k categories that participants chose to take part in.

The route loop, which finishes back to the starting point in Centrio, took the runners to the barangays along the Claro M. Recto highway, with the 3k run at Lapasan, 5k run at Gusa, 10k run at Cugman, and 21k at Agusan.

One of the participants, Joanna Paula Cera Roa, a virtual assistant, has been an avid runner for 10 years.

“It’s the comeback Freedom Run (for me) after four years,” Roa said.

“I enjoy joining races because it’s fun and nothing beats the feeling (of) knowing that your body can achieve anything you put your mind to,” she added.

This event was organized by Circle Productions, Inc, which has organized the Freedom Run since 2010, and other running events earlier this year, and will be hosting another one on the city’s upcoming fiesta.
