AN intense gunfight ensued in a joint law enforcement operation against former Maimung Vice Mayor Pando Mudjasan at his residence in Barangay Bualo Lipid, Maimbung, Sulu on June 24, at around 7:30 am.

According to Colonel Jorry Baclor, Chief of the AFP Public Affairs Office, the clash was an operation of the Army’s 41st Infantry Battalion in coordination with Philippine National Police’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG), and 7th Special Action Battalion.

Mudjasan was served with search warrants for violating the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act and the Illegal Possession of Explosives; and with arrest warrants for charges of murder, double murder, and multiple murders.

Based on the police reports, the group of Mudjasan initiated the shooting which resulted in the death of one policeman and 13 others were wounded including two civilians.

Wounded troops were rushed to Integrated Provincial Health Office-Sulu Provincial Hospital via a Blackhawk chopper and a speedboat and later on transferred to Zamboanga City.

Meanwhile, almost 5,000 evacuees are currently residing in three evacuation centers provided by the Municipal Government of Maimbung with the assistance of the Ministry of Social and Development Services and the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office at the municipal and provincial levels.
