ON July 1, Mindanao Gold Star Daily, a renowned local newspaper, celebrates its 34th anniversary, highlighting its significant role in advancing community journalism in the region.

Since its establishment in 1989, Mindanao Gold Star Daily has been dedicated to revolutionizing local journalism, earning the trust of Mindanao’s residents as a reliable source of news.

Published by Gold Star Daily News Publishing (formerly known as Mindanao Gold Star Daily Corporation), the newspaper’s headquarters is situated at Cor. Baconga St., Lapasan Highway, Cagayan de Oro City.

Under the ownership of Catherine Marie Ann C. Pelayo, Mindanao Gold Star Daily consistently delivers high-quality journalism to its readers.

Leading the editorial team is Leonardo Vicente “Cong” B. Corrales as the Editor in Chief, assisted by Ben Balce as the Associate Editor and Kristian Dave Achondo as the Editorial Assistant.

Ruchelle Bangis skillfully manages the administration, and her dedicated team has played a crucial role in the newspaper’s success and reputation.

From its inception, Mindanao Gold Star Daily has been committed to showcasing the interests and concerns of rural areas, spearheading the growth of community journalism. 

Ernesto G. Chu, President Emeritus and Founder of The Mindanao Gold Star Daily Corporation, envisioned the newspaper as a catalyst for countryside development in Mindanao.

With a pre-pandemic daily circulation production of 60,600 copies, Mindanao Gold Star Daily primarily relies on direct subscriptions to reach its readers.

Ben Balce is this newspaper's Associate Editor. Before joining the Gold Star Daily, Ben worked as the regional correspondent for northern Mindanao of Malaya, (now Business Insight) and Abante, both Manila-based national newspapers. Ben joined Gold star daily in 1997 as a city reporter. After 3-months, he was appointed by Gold Star Daily's publisher Ernesto G. Chu, to be the paper’s editorial cartoonist. Ben was a newspaperman and an editorial cartoonist of Gold Star Daily for more than ten years. He was also commissioned as the Executive Editor of the Quarterly Newsletter of the Police Regional Office 10 (PRO-10) from 2002 to 2007. Ben was a regular member of local and international news organizations, which includes among others Cagayan de Oro Press Club (COPC), National Union of Journalist in the Philippines (NUJP), Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism (PCIJ), and Peace and Conflict Journalism Network (Pecojon).
