LAST week’s launching of the bivalent Covid-19 vaccine in Cagayan de Oro City coincided with the steady decline of active Covid-19 cases in the city which numbered 74 last June, the City Health Office (CHO) said yesterday.

“Of the 74 new Covid-19 cases, about 39 are inmates (persons deprived of liberty/PDL), 29 are local index, two are (authorized persons outside of residence) with links, two died, one APOR and one local with a link. Also, 54 tested negative after being re-swabbed. Of the 20 cases recorded from June 1 to 7, 12 are PDLs,” City Health Officer Dr. Rachel Dilla said during Monday’s Covid-19 press briefing.

Dr. Dilla said this as the CHO called on the public particularly senior citizens to secure their third booster vaccine to augment their protection from the virus.

“Since its launching, about 66 seniors secured the bivalent vaccine and 18 for health care frontliners since the bivalent vaccine launching in Barangay Macanhan last June 29,” CHO immunization program coordinator Dr. Ina Grace Chiu said.

Dr. Chiu said those eligible to receive the bivalent Covid-19 vaccine, for now, are healthcare frontliners and seniors who’ve received their second booster shot at least four to six months prior to the third booster.

One year after the re-launching of the vaccination campaign, Cagayan de Oro City vaccinated 107,724 Kagay-anons since July 1, 2022, Dr. Chiu said.

With the increased vaccination, Cagayan de Oro City’s active Covid-19 cases went down steadily to single digits in recent weeks, said CHO resident epidemiologist Dr. Teodulfo Joselito Retuya Jr.

“If we keep this up (and sustain our vaccination campaign) we may see Covid-19 become endemic as the World Health Organization said similar to the common flu,” Dr. Retuya said.

Most of the Covid-19 cases in June were males at 76 percent with females at 20 percent while 64 cases were aged 18 to 59 years old.

“Also there were several cases in Barangay Lumbia, including gated communities…about 50 percent of the cases were mild while the rest were asymptomatic. More than 90 percent of the new cases were vaccinated while 15 percent were unvaccinated,” Dr. Retuya said. (Stephen Capillas of City Information Office)
