RIGHT Rev. Felixberto L. Calang, Diocesan Bishop of Cagayan de Oro City of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente urged the Marcos administration to address the rampant poverty in the county and to resume the peace talks to end the decades-old insurgency.

In an interview during the 121st Proclamation Anniversary of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI) held at the Sugbongcogon Gym on August 3, Calang said he hopes to see an end to the insurgency by solving the problem of poverty and social marginalization in the country.

He said the 121st Proclamation Anniversary of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente is a profound opportunity for the church’s call for Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to resume the peace talks between the state and the revolutionary forces under the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP).

The call is for the two parties to subject themselves to the Hague Joint Agreement signed by both parties in September of 1992, under then-President Fidel Ramos, Calang added.

Calang believes that addressing poverty and social marginalization in the country is the right way to end the insurgency.

“Ang pag pasurender sigurado nga maka pa surender gayod, apan dili kini makapausab sa kahimtang sa mga tawo sa katilingban.” Calang said.

In a separate interview, Sugbongcogon Mayor Mildred Lagbas-Mondigo said she supports the call of Calang.

Mayor Mondigo, as a long-time member of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente said she will always support the call of Calang because it is the desire and goal of the church to bring the people to the government.

“We have seen since its beginning that our church continues to fight for justice and against poverty,” said Mondigo.

She added that the church advocates for peace.
