CITY Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office officially launched the “Suroy sa Ta” Heritage Walking Tour on Monday, August 7, as part of the core events for the upcoming Higalaay Festival 2023 in celebration of Senor San Agustin.

“The main objective of this activity is to revisit the history of Cagayan de Oro City,” said City Mayor’s Office Chief of Staff Shiel Lumbatan adding that especially its historic structures, landmarks, and significant events, including the city’s formation.

The City Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office collaborated with the Cagayan de Oro Travel and Tours Association Inc. (COTTA) and enlisted the assistance of registered tour guides from the city for this endeavor.

“This activity allows participants to go back in time and explore the important events, old buildings, and famous places that have shaped the city’s history,” said Lumbatan.

By joining this walking tour, acvordingbto Lumbatan people can understand how the city came to be and how it has grown over the years. 

She said the tour also aims to show the significance of preserving and valuing Cagayan de Oro’s history.

Participants will be guided to various interesting spots like the City Museum and the San Agustin Cathedral, among others, which have played a big role in making Cagayan de Oro what it is today.

This experience will help people appreciate and respect the city’s past and see how it continues to impact the culture and traditions of the city today, said Lumbatan.

Lumbatan also said the walking tour includes visits to various significant sites such as the City Museum, the old water tank, as well as historic places like the San Agustin Cathedral, Duaw Park, City Hall Executive Building, Lourdes College, Amphitheater, Divisoria, and more. 

Participants in the walking tour include department managers from the city hall, City Council officials, members of the academe, and city scholars. 

The heritage walking tour will span five days and will conclude on Friday, August 11, according to Lumbatan.
