ILIGAN City ― We were having coffee along with some sandwiches me and my good friend Fely in some coffee shop in the city while we talked just about anything. Like, I suddenly remembered a post on FB whereby the face of VP Sara was posted on the left side. And on the right side of her was a “cream”: for the face, called “Ponds”. And a picture too of that cream. Over it were some words that were blurred somewhat. I told my friend about that and said that I had to enlarge some more my small eyes to find out what was written above the “cream.” It was the word, “confidential.”
“Now I learned about a new kind of enemy.” my friend said while sipping some coffee. This she said with a kind of naughty smile, per my view of her face.
“Ha? What is? What are you talking about?” I asked.
“Am talking about her confidential and intelligence funds, what else, the words that you said you had to “open some more your small eyes to see what words were above the ‘cream’ “
Even if it was only “her” that she mentioned I knew that she was talking about VP Sara for it had been a hot topic these past few days. “Those who are opposing such are her enemies.”
“No, she said enemies of the state. I mean, nation. State or nation, that’s the same,” I corrected her.
“Oh, you’re right. And I learned that those who oppose such is an enemy. Of the state, or nation, or whatever.”
“That’s politics in this country. And maybe in the whole world too. In politics, there are no permanent friends or enemies’ as they say, ‘only permanent interests.’ ”
As she was saying this, I remembered some dialogue in a war movie about some American soldiers in WW II fighting the Japanese on an island in the Pacific, a place called Guadalcanal. That soldier said: “The Japs are not our enemy now; it is the jungle and the rain.” And I repeated that script to her.
“Yes, ” she said. ” Enemies change from time to time There is even a view to a kill. I mean, there is a view that the doing away. I mean, the ‘realignment’ of the over P600 million confidential funds of the OVP and DepEd Secretary in next year’s national budget had made the House of Rep Speaker Martin Romualdez her enemy. Although he had said to people who are having that view they are ‘over analyzing,’ or some words to the effect. Because it is a way of ‘demolishing’ when she runs for President in the next presidential elections. Of which Romualdez is running too. A case of ‘disunity’ which was then the mantra of the PBBM-Sara tandem last year.s elections.”
And then I remembered that question I asked Atty. Homobono Adaza when he was a guest speaker of the journalists here a few years ago when I said: “Do you think that we, ourselves can be our enemy?”
What do you mean?” The lawyer had asked.
I mean, there’s a quote, which is attributed to the Canadians which says, ‘I have known the enemy, and the enemy is myself!’ Do you agree with that?”
Everybody in the hall laughed. Even Adaza couldn’t decide immediately if he agreed or disagreed with that kind of quote.
I narrated that to my friend Fely. And even she pondered that one for a while.
