COUNCILOR Kim Michael Odchigue of Medina, situated in the eastern part of Misamis Oriental, delivered a compelling message today, imploring parents to dedicate more time, love, and care to their children in order to mitigate the risk of suicide, a concern that predominantly afflicts young individuals and students.

Councilor Odchigue shared this vital message during the induction ceremony of the School Parents Teachers Association (SPTA) officers, held on October 24, at the premises of the Medina National Comprehensive High School (MNCHS) within the town.

His plea follows a series of recent suicidal incidents, with the latest tragic occurrence reported in Gingoog City on October 22, amplifying concerns over this escalating issue.

“The prevalence of these suicidal incidents is profoundly distressing,” remarked Councilor Odchigue. He underlined the critical role parents play in averting such occurrences, emphasizing that dedicating time to their children can be instrumental in prevention.

“We absolutely need to regularly connect with our children,” he insisted. “It’s essential to check up on them, converse with them, and, if possible, ensure they have adequate spending time for leisure and relaxation.”

Odchigue also advised parents to consistently inquire about their children’s academic progress and well-being once they return from school. Furthermore, he called for vigilant monitoring of their children’s activities on social media to safeguard against exposure to harmful influences.

During the induction ceremony, Councilor Odchigue swore in the new set of SPTA officers, with Margie Nicholie Fullante assuming the role of President. The officer lineup also includes Edwin M. Iyo as Vice President, Erick John Lapu-Lapu as Secretary, Madelene Botanas as Treasurer, and Archiel Cloma as Auditor.

In addition, the SPTA Board of Directors was introduced, comprising Karen Joy Cosadio, Cheyserr Absuelo, Nenoche Caralde, Nonelyn Yamson, Lolit Ipan, Lucile Pesalver, and Heide Alegado.
