TROPICAL depression Kabayan (international name: Jelawat) has intensified into a tropical storm Sunday night and is now packing 65-kilometer-per-hour winds as it moves into Northern Mindanao and Caraga regions this morning.

Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) spotted the tropical storm at 11 pm Sunday at 275 kilometers east of Davao City and is expected to make landfall in Surigao del Sur and Davao Oriental Monday morning.

“By 8 am Monday, Kabayan will be in the vicinity of Malitbog town in Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro,” Ann Fortich of Pagasa-El Salvador, Misamis Oriental told reporters here in Cagayan de Oro.

Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) no 2 is raised over the provinces of Dinagat Islands, Surigao Del Norte, Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Norte, Agusan del Sur, and the northern portion of Davao Oriental.

Signal no. 1 is hoisted over the provinces of Davao del Oro, Davao del Norte, Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao del Norte, Cotabato, Zamboanga del Sur, and Zamboanga del Norte.

This morning, Mayor Rolando Uy issued Executive Order 420-2023 suspending classes in both public and private pre-schools in the city.

Nick Jabagat, chief of the Cagayan de Oro Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office said their operation center went on “red alert” Sunday in anticipation of a worst-case scenario.

“The eastern barangays of Bugo, Puerto, Agusan, Tablon, Cugman, and Agusan are always high risk if their rivers overflow their banks, Jabagat said.

He said Pagasa informed them to expect 50 to 100 millimeters of rain once Tropical Storm Kabayan reached the vicinity of Cagayan de Oro on Monday.

City Information Officer Ivy Guantero told reporters they had advised removing the giant tarpaulins from its structures yesterday.

Meanwhile, Coast Guard acting commander Cagayan de Oro Station Captain Joselito Maluyo said maritime traffic for all vessels and watercraft in Northern Mindanao is suspended. the order was issued by Pagasa last night when typhoon signal no. 1 was hoisted.

Office of Civil Defense-10 director Antonio Sugarol said Camiguin has made a preemptive evacuation to 14 families totaling 73 persons in Sagay town this morning.

Sugarol added that the local governments of Opol and Jasaan suspended classes in their schools ahead of the landfall of Kabayan.
