MANILA City ― The Misamis Oriental delegates, with over 100 athletes representing the Paglaum pride of Governor Peter M. Unabia, seek to better their three-gold finish last year in the 2023 Batang Pinoy National Championships now underway at Rizal Memorial Sports Complex here.

The 16-year-old Marc Angelo Cabiluna from the Villanueva National High School will be back in the exciting athletics competition after his double-gold triumph in Vigan City where he ruled the long jump and triple jump events.

“He’s determined to bring home the (bacon) again,” said Cabiluna’s coach and mother Cherry.

The five-foot-three Cabiluna expects the same rival from Masbate Sports Academy ― Jonathan Bellosillo ― to be his toughest test.

Arena Fide Master Janin Dhrey Querequere from Balingoan also hopes for another gold finish in chess where the province of Misamis Oriental completes all the 20-spot rivalries in the 9-under, 11-under, 13-under, 15-under, and 17-under boys and girls categories.

Querequere won her opening round match in the standard event on Sunday morning, December 17, but her 11-under girls partner Rena Dalagan faltered.

The 11-under boys tandem of Miykael Jerahmiel Lapad and Jan Calvin Abesamis, the 15-under girls’ pair of Lyn Getubig and LJ Getubig, and the 17-under boys duo of Karl Augusto Xander Sayson and Khent Lourence Cañas made a perfect start by winning all their respective chess matches over at the GSIS Coliseum in Pasay City.

Close to 14,000 athletes from ages 17 and below sent by 200 local governments are competing in the Batang Pinoy meet, featuring 25 sports disciplines including archery, arnis, badminton, basketball 3×3, boxing, cycling, dancesport, football, gymnastics, judo, karatedo, kickboxing, lawn tennis, muay Thai, pencak silat, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, beach volleyball, wrestling, weightlifting, and wushu.

Meanwhile, the Cagayan de Oro delegation with a five-gold harvest in chess, was reportedly defaulted in the opener of the standard chess event.

Mao pay pag-abot gikan sa ilang paglawig sa dagat wala na gyod nakasapon sa first round,” parent-coach Jean Ancheta told Gold Star Daily.
