IN a recent clearing operation conducted by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the eastern part of the province, approximately 161 commercial and residential buildings, signage, and fences were either partially or destroyed.

The operation targeted the Barangays of San Lorenzo and Baoc Baoc in the town of Balingoan, resulting in significant structural damage.

Balingoan’s Mayor, Aaron Paul Unabia, swiftly directed the municipal social welfare and development (MSWD) to extend assistance to the affected individuals.

This aid includes financial support and the provision of essential items such as food, acknowledging the immediate needs arising from the demolition activity.

Approximately 25% of the Balingoan Integrated Bus Terminal building suffered damage during the operation. Additionally, a section of a commercial-residential concrete building, owned by former Mayor Lauro Go of Kinoguitan in the province, situated in front of the terminal, was also impacted.

In a telephone interview, MSWD head Faith L. Arbuis revealed that around 178 families, classified as informal settlers, have been affected by the demolition.

She highlighted the readiness of a relocation site for these families, facilitated through the municipal government’s Internally Displaced Persons program.

Arbuis clarified that the demolition activity had been pending since the time of President Rodrigo Duterte, but due to humanitarian considerations, it had been postponed.

However, the DPWH has now proceeded with the demolition to accommodate the widening of the highway.

“The DPWH, despite requests for extension or postponement, has implemented the demolitions to facilitate the highway widening,” stated Arbuis.

The affected individuals had been informed about the impending situation through a series of dialogues and meetings conducted by the local government unit of Balingoan in previous years.

Currently, the total cost of the damages incurred remains undetermined, as reported by Arbuis.
