The two-day event began with a torch-lighting ceremony led by City Councilor Suzette Magtajas-Daba, Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President Kenneth John Sacala, and City Scholarships Office Head Richel Petalcurin-Dahay.

The event aims to foster character development and self-discipline among city scholars through sports.

More than 5,000 city scholars participated in the cup, which featured basketball, volleyball, Larong Pinoy, trivia games, E-Games, chess, and board games held concurrently at Lourdes College Sports Complex and STI College.

At the Pelaez Sports Center, reported that Mayor Uy encouraged scholars to set their sights on higher academic pursuits, including graduate studies, emphasizing the importance of continuing education.

The City Scholarship Program is set to expand its reach, now including coveted disciplines such as law and medicine, thereby opening new opportunities for Oro students.

The City Scholarship Program is set to broaden its scope further, revealing that starting from the next school year, nursing students will be eligible from their sophomore year onward.

This strategic expansion aims to address the shortage of medical professionals in the city.

The scholars will enhance the local healthcare system, explaining that in exchange for their education, scholars are expected to commit two years of service to the city government, giving back to the community that invested in their potential.

The need for additional medical staff is urgent, particularly at the JR Borja General Hospital, which is operating well beyond its capacity, requiring an additional 150 healthcare professionals to effectively manage the patient load.

The announcement was made amidst a gathering where over 4,000 city scholars participated in a sports event.

These scholars, known as ISDA (Iskolar sa Dakbayan, or Scholars of the City), are a testament to the city’s commitment to education and development.

Beyond the sports and competitive spirit, Mayor Uy highlighted the importance of camaraderie and support among scholars.

Hinting at larger plans for their future, he promised the scholars a special role in the upcoming Charter Day celebrations and teased the possibility of more substantial rewards to come.
