IN a groundbreaking decision, Barangay Lapasan in Cagayan de Oro City has become the first to halt classes due to the scorching heat brought by the El Niño phenomenon, an unprecedented move in response to the extreme weather conditions gripping the city.

Barangay Chairman Julito Ogsimer made the announcement today, declaring the suspension of classes for both public elementary and high school students in Lapasan. Among the affected schools are the East City Central School and Lapasan National High School.

The decision comes after numerous concerns raised by teachers regarding the health and well-being of students enduring the blistering temperatures.

Ogsimer revealed that some students were already showing signs of fatigue and illness, with reports of dizziness and respiratory issues.

Mga bata ra kaayo ang nag-antos sa init. Naay mga estudyante nga gi hilantan, giubo, gi sip-on,” Ogsimer said.

Yesterday, an emergency meeting was convened involving school principals, teachers, representatives from the Bureau of Fire, and other concerned agencies to address the escalating situation.

Consequently, classes will remain suspended from today until next week (April 12) to ensure the safety and comfort of students.

Ogsimer pointed out the importance of prioritizing the well-being of students, emphasizing that learning in such extreme conditions would be futile.

Dili na epektibo ang pagtoon sa mga bata tungod sa kainit. Naa nay nagsunggo, naa nay nakuyapan, so dili nata magpaabot nga mo worst pa ang scenario,” he said.

As classes are put on hold for a week, Ogsimer instructed Barangay Tanods to patrol and monitor locations where students might gather during the suspension. He also issued a reminder for students to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary exposure to the scorching heat.

In another development, Misamis Oriental Agriculturist Benjamin Resma provided updates on the agricultural sector, stating that there have been no significant damages reported so far. While some minor losses in vegetable crops due to the heat were noted, overall impacts remain minimal.

Naay mga ginagmay na tala mga utanon, nangamatay tungod sa init pero wala pay mga dinagko gyud nga apektado na,” Resma said.
